South Dakota, Cardinals, and Stuff

I haven't posted in a while, and I finally have some free time! There has been some interesting stuff happening lately, so I'll put some links up here in case you haven't heard.

Pope Benedict XVI names 15 new cardinals -Catholic World News
The announcement was made on February 22, the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, and the consistory will take place on March 24, the vigil of the Annunciation of the Lord. You can find a list of the soon to be cardinals in the article, but some of the more well-known (well, to me) bishops include:
  • Archbishop William Levada, the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, formerly Archbishop of San Francisco.
  • Archbishop Stanislas Dziwisz of Krakow, Poland and Pope John Paul II's secretary (heard a lot of him leading up to the death of the Holy Father)
  • Archbishop Sean O'Malley of Boston.

Back here in the United States, there's been some interesting abortion related news. The House and Senate of the state of South Dakota have aggreed to a bill that would make abortion a felony. Doctors who perform abortions in any case except for saving the life of the mother could be punished with up to five years in prison. The governor Mike Rounds (R) has said that he is "inclined to sign the bill". Governor Rounds is a pro-life Catholic.

South Dakota House OKs Bill to Ban Nearly All Abortions

This will be challenged, of course, but it's hoped that the Supreme Court will look at it and it's prior decision in Roe v. Wade. It's certainly a long shot, but very welcome! I'd just like to know why doctors would only receive a maximum of five years for the murder of a unborn baby... just a thought. God bless all of you as we approach the Lenten season. First two Fridays of Lent I'll be suffering through practice Spanish AP tests after school from 1:15-4:00. Mrs. Ruch said it was very apropos...
